When looking to purchase or change your locks for your home or business, the amount of options can become overwhelming. At Nearby Locksmiths we are dedicated to making that choice easy for you and can provide knowledgeable advice on the finest locks to protect your property.

Although there are many types of locks to consider, the four most common are padlocks, knob locks, deadbolts, and levers.

1.Padlocks: Padlocks are the only type of lock that is typically not permanently attached to anything else. They utilise a shackle to secure the item of interest and come in an array of sizes. Typically, there are two styles of padlocks, keyed and combination, and both retain the three main components: the body, the shackle, and the locking mechanism. Padlocks are very easily compromised as they can be broken by force or bypassed by more subtle means such as lock picking or shimming.

2.Knob Locks: Knob locks are generally found in residential properties as the primary locking device on both internal and external doors. These locks have a key cylinder located on one side and a rotatable knob on the other that controls the lock. When using knob locks on external doors, they should always be accompanied by a secondary lock, such as a deadbolt, as they are easily compromised by force.

3.Deadbolts: Deadbolts are usually found on external doors to residential properties and are usually accompanied by a knob lock. They use a rotating cylinder that drives a bold into the door frame that cannot be retracted until the locking cylinder is one again rotated. These locks are much more resilient to brute force attacks and are resistant to shimming.

4.Lever Handle Locks: Lever handle locks are commonly found on the inner doors of commercial building. They use a lever that can either swing up or down to release the bold. Like knob locks, they have a key cylinder on one side and a rotatable turn knob on the other. As they use a lever, they are very easy to open which makes them the ideal lock for commercial environments.
